She travels alone? She isn’t scared of the world? How does she manage staying safe? She must learn taekwondo to defend herself at the time of need!”

Well, we do see nervousness in people who do not get the whole concept of a woman traveling alone. Where some still consider it a taboo, for some, the thought just doesn’t go down their throat. This blog of mine might change your perception towards solo female travelers!

During my last trip to Rajasthan, I met a girl, almost my age. While I grew up in a family where women were considered as delicate human beings who need to be pampered, this girl made my whole upbringing seem absurd.

Why am I calling her a girl? Well, it adds more drama to my blog as I so wish to keep the focus on my protagonist (A GIRL).

I met her during my journey to Jaipur, the famous pink city of Rajasthan. Dressed modestly in a loose t-shirt and a calf length pant, she was busy interacting with a local selling Rajasthani handicraft.

She looked confident, like a veteran solo traveler’, I thought to myself. While I was lost in noticing her keenness in the culture of Rajasthan, she instantly looked up and smiled at me. May be it was her friendly aura or her boldness to mingle with a stranger with such ease. I was impressed to the core!

On being asked why she travels alone, she questioned back, ‘why shouldn’t I?’ The girl shared how she managed to convince her parents for letting her travel solo, things she learnt while staying away from her loved ones, and how she addressed her safety concerns. While sharing some insights of the life of a solo female traveler, she shared some mind blowing tips which I feel are must read for every solo traveler, including both men and women!

  • Pack light

  • Stay in touch with your friends and family

  • Book a hotel close to the main attractions

  • Learn local language and gestures

  • Dress modestly

  • Look confident, stay alert

  • Keep your belonging safe, and avoid carrying or flaunting too much cash

  • Be proactive about public transportation

Well, though I am a solo traveler myself, a hint of jealousy struck me. Perhaps being a solo female traveler is a different experience altogether. Sadly, it was beyond imagination for me!
