Famed as one of the largest salt deserts in the World, the Great Rann of Kutch in Gujarat is oceans of elusive sand. Kutch isn’t just a desert; it is an experience, more than just a cultural experience. This phenomenal salt desert of Gujarat hides a beautiful pearl in its bosom, called the Rann Utsav.

Exuding an applaud-worthy canvas of culture, profusion of art forms, and an overabundance of life, Rann Utsav welcomes thousands of visitors from all around the world every year. There are over 400 tents of varying capacity and facilities, which alone is an experience of a lifetime. Spending the night on the astonishing white landscape is a feeling that is hard to put in words.

Since its advent in 2008, the popularity of the festival has grown manifolds. Kutch is a vast region, and visiting it during the Rann Utsav can certainly make it easier to traverse.

Organized by the Tourism Department of Gujarat, Rann Utsav is an impressive winter rendezvous. The year 2018-’19 season is scheduled from Nov 1st, 2018 to Feb 20th, 2019. The celebration of Rann Utsav takes place on a grand level. It begins in Bhuj and the finale is put up at a tent city, full of more than 400 AC and non AC tents. It is set up near a small village called Dhordo, easily accessible from the Bhuj airport.

The festivity of Rann Utsav goes on for 3 months, hosting an array of exciting activities whilst offering plentiful experiences for the visitors to cherish forever. The festival is a treat to all your senses. While your taste buds relish the taste of authentic food, your ears enjoy the sound of folk music, and your eyes soak the wonderful panoramas of the radiant desert. You can feel the air of merriment and oneness enveloped around you, leaving you with a sense of relief.

Rann Utsav celebrates coming together of various cultures. So along with the warm hospitality, you can expect an amalgamation of different customs. So, it’s not only the Gujarati folks that you can spot doing dandia, but expect to see migrants of Kutch from places as far as Sindh and Afghanistan.

Also, if you thought it is going to be your usual tents, then be prepared to step into the fairyland of mud huts. At night the place is like one of those Disney movies and you will definitely love it.

  • Sunrise and Sunset – The white canvas of Rann gets filled with the most beautiful colours of nature at the sunrise and sunset. Imagine a vast stretch of barren land, flawless and exquisite. Keeping your vacationing needs in mind, the Rann Utsav has an entire tent dedicated to spa and massages for the guests. So, when you get tired of rigmarole, you know where to head for that relaxing evening. Enjoy a massage session and let the magical skills of the masseur take over your mind, body and soul. It does not get any better!

  • Cultural Fiesta – One experience that you must not miss is attending the cultural fiesta. This is one event where folk artists from all corners of Gujarat participate. This is one of those perfect bonfire moments in the desert where you dance to the tunes of folk music. The ecstasy of being part of the fiesta is hard to put in words, and can only be experienced.

  • Feel the Adrenaline Rush – To tease the daredevil within you there is an entire area at the Rann Utsav dedicated to thrilling adventure activities. Zip-lining, rock climbing, sky fall, pendulum swing and a rappelling wall, all these activities can be enjoyed at the festival. Apart from all the fun, these activities also allow you to face your fears and conquer them. Those who love the heights can enjoy para-motoring, which one of the most enthralling experiences here. To look at the pristine white desert from a bird’s eye view is an absolutely different experience. This is one experience you would definitely want more than once.
